Can I scrap a car that isn't in my name in Hampshire?

Scrapping a car registered to someone else — what's allowed, what isn't, and how to handle inheritance, gifts and forgotten registrations.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. The rule: the person named on the V5C, or their legal representative, must authorise the scrap. If the V5 isn't in your name, there are three common scenarios and each has a legal route.

Scenario 1 — Inherited car

You need grant of probate or letters of administration. Bring the document (or a solicitor's letter confirming your authority). We regularly collect estate vehicles across Hampshire; some estates have three or four cars to clear at once.

Scenario 2 — Bought recently, V5 not transferred

Bring the bill of sale/receipt, the V5C/2 'new keeper' slip and your ID. We can complete the notification in your name. If you've had the car more than a few weeks, transfer the V5 first to avoid confusion.

Scenario 3 — Landlord/agent removing an abandoned vehicle

See our Abandoned Vehicle Removal Hampshire page. Landowner authority plus a documented notice period is the standard route.

When we can't collect

No V5, no proof of purchase, no relationship to the registered keeper, and no landowner authority = we can't legally collect. It's rare, but we won't bend the rules. Call us on 0238 155 0183 to talk through your specific situation.
