Scrap car tax refund — how to claim it back
The good news: you don't have to do anything. When we scrap your car, we notify DVLA the same day. DVLA then refunds any full unused months of road tax to the address on your V5 — usually within a few weeks.

We collect your car and notify DVLA the same day.
1–2 weeks
DVLA processes the notification. Direct debits stop automatically.
2–6 weeks
Refund cheque arrives at the address on the V5.
