DVLA guide: scrapping a vehicle in Hampshire (what they actually require)
Plain-English guide to the DVLA side of scrapping — V5C/3, Certificate of Destruction, road tax refund, SORN, retention of personalised plates.
The DVLA side of scrapping a car is simpler than it sounds — provided you use an Authorised Treatment Facility. Here's exactly what DVLA requires, and what we handle for you.
1. V5C/3 — Notification of Sale to a Motor Trader
The yellow section at the bottom of the V5C. You sign it on collection, we submit it to DVLA. Online submission is instant — you get an email confirmation within minutes.
2. Certificate of Destruction (CoD)
Issued only by ATFs. DVLA records the car as destroyed and you can never be billed for tax, MOT or fines on it again. We email yours within 48 hours.
3. Road tax refund
Automatic — DVLA refunds full unused months by cheque to the address on the V5 record. Allow 4–6 weeks. Update your DVLA address first if you've moved.
4. Personalised plate retention (V317)
If you want to keep your private plate, apply on DVLA before collection — it costs £80 and takes a few minutes. We then remove the plates physically on the day.
5. SORN
A car under SORN is fine to scrap. DVLA cancels the SORN automatically when the destruction is recorded.
