How do I claim a tax refund after scrapping my car in the UK?

8 August 2026 4 min read

You don't need to claim — DVLA automatically refunds unused road tax once your V5C/3 is processed. Timing, amounts and what to do if it doesn't arrive.

You don't need to fill in a form. Once DVLA processes the V5C/3 ('sold to a motor trader') the scrap dealer submits, they automatically refund any full unused months of vehicle tax to the address on the V5C, by cheque, within 4–6 weeks.

How much do I get back?

Full unused months only — no part-months. If you scrap on the 2nd of the month, you lose that month. Direct-debit payers get the balance stopped and a refund of any credit.

What if it doesn't arrive?

  • Wait 6 weeks from collection
  • Check the address on the V5C was current
  • Call DVLA on 0300 790 6802 with the reg and CoD reference

Insurance refund

Separate from DVLA. Call your insurer after collection — most refund pro-rata minus a small admin fee. Cancel after we've collected, never before.
